PSYO486 001: Queering Psychology from an Intersectionality Lens
(Student Directed Seminar)
This course explores the psychological experiences of the LGBTQ2SIAA+ community from an intersectional lens. Through the exploration of relevant theories (e.g., minority stress, resilience, concealability and visibility of identities), this course considers how similar/different LGBTQ2SIAA+ community members experience their everyday lives as compared to non-LGBTQ2SIAA+ community members. This course considers not only LGBTQ2SIAA+ community members’ individual experiences, but also how their lived identities influence their relationship processes and familial formation considerations within and outside the North American context.
Course Goals and Objectives:
Develop an understanding on the key debates occurring within Queer Psychology as a field.
Relate LGBTQ2SIAA+ communities’ experiences to different psychological theories (e.g., developmental theories, well-being and mental health, social psychological experiences, abnormal psychology and clinical interventions).
Evaluate how and when intersectionality as a concept is included/neglected in the course of discussions surrounding psychology and LGBTQ2SIAA+ communities
Reflect on theories learnt about LGBTQ2SIAA+, psychology and intersectionality in real-world experiences amongst LGBTQ2SIAA+ communities
Apply their knowledge of LGBTQ2SIAA+ psychology and intersectionality beyond the scope of Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich and Democratic societies.
